Renting a Car in Bulgaria: What to Know

Car hire in Bulgaria is widely available at major airports and city centres. To get the best deal, book in advance rather than at the desk — prices are typically lower and vehicle availability is better when reserved ahead of travel.

Fuel policy: Most suppliers operate a full-to-full policy — collect the car with a full tank and return it the same way to avoid refuelling charges. Always confirm the policy before accepting the keys.

Insurance and excess: Basic collision damage waiver (CDW) is usually included but with a high excess. Consider purchasing standalone excess insurance before you travel — it is almost always cheaper than options offered at the rental desk.

Credit card deposit: A credit card in the main driver’s name is required at most rental desks for the security deposit. Debit cards are not accepted by the majority of suppliers. Check the payment policy before booking.

Driving licence: Your national driving licence is required at pickup. Some destinations also require an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence — check the requirements for Bulgaria before you travel.

City centre rentals can offer lower rates than airport locations, which often include an airport surcharge. If your accommodation is in or near a city centre, compare both options before booking.
